before museums, there was the wunderkammer [ˈvʊndɐˌkamɐ]. loosely translating to “cabinet of curiosities”, these were personal collections of oddities ranging from natural wonders to synthetic marvels, reflecting whatever was capturing the curiosity of the curator at that given time.
